Wikispace: 100 points on second marking period
*Wikispace grade is an overall grade for the entire group. If you feel as though members of your group have not contributed fairly and might take your group average down because of their lack of effort, then it is your responsibility to provide me with a list of who contributed what. I will investigate the situation and make a decision. Of course, you will have to provide proof that you attempted to resolve this issue on your own (copy of email message, etc.)
Midterm Grade: One page min/max
Midterm Day
On Monday, you and your group will present your wikispace. Your wikispace is tremendous with a LOT of information so of course, you won't be able to share it entirely with the class. However, your presentation will include each individual member sharing a brief review of their midterm essay and how the evidence for the essay can be found on the wikispace.
Wikispace Grade:
The overall goal of your wikispace is to trace the positive or negative timeline that has occurred in your country ever since colonization. My hope is that you'll be able to decide whether the problems this country has endured within the last 20 years are connected to colonization. Remember, Achebe's message was "When the center cannot hold, things fall apart". Is your country an example of this theme?
Your wikispace must include all the major categories that I required initially, but as each group leaned further into your country, you found specific pages that were necessary to add for your country. Each page should of course include facts (citations of each page for the facts), pictures, but most importantly, each page must include a 'reaction' paragraph personally written by you that will brief your viewers about the content of the page. This is NOT just a summary, but your paragraph should have a clear thesis/topic sentence that delivers your position on the information. For example, if you are creating a government page, the paragraph might begin with a sentence like this: The government system in Guinea has been plagued with corruption ever since it's independence.
Extra Point Consideration will be provided towards all 'extra' pages that include peripheral topics such as culture, holidays, movie reviews, and/or music.
Midterm Essay: Ok, now this is going to be interesting. Once upon a time, a long time ago, we read a pretty witty essay by the very famous American writer/satirist, Mark Twain. You may recall how he 'pretended' to be King Leopold II and wrote a sarcastic 'praise' of all the good things he did for the Congo. For your assignment, you get to choose any person (a famous leader, a notorious president, a hero, a citizen, a native, a tourist, etc.) and write a one page min/max letter that mimics the satirical tone that Twain used. This essay should draw right from the research and information you have gathered. We'll discuss this essay together on Friday and Monday. I'm really excited about this paper because it will give you a chance to write a purposeful paper with a challenging edge.
